Coats are one of the most important forms of outerwear for the well-dressed man. Coats come in a wide range of models, but they can all be described as a longer kind of jacket covering the majority of the outfit worn underneath.

As with a number of other garments, current trends have led to coats that are much shorter than when they originally entered the male wardrobe. A shorter yet still timeless coat should reach somewhere between the mid-thigh and the knee. A full-length coat should fall below the knee.

Coats are perfect for wearing over blazers and suits. They also work well when worn over a shirt or jumper paired with jeans or chinos and well-chosen shoes. Black coats work best in combination with black or grey trousers.

Trench coats and driving coats are often made from weatherproof fabrics and can therefore serve as raincoats. The trench coat was originally created as a functional, military garment.
