At Care of Carl, we're guided by a clear vision: to highlight clothing that reflects craftsmanship, quality, and timeless style. These are garments not only to be worn but appreciated, cared for, and cherished throughout life. We call them Classics of Tomorrow – pieces that stand the test of time, in both form and fabric.
It's understandable to hesitate when spending a significant sum on something as everyday as a basic jumper. But your wardrobe staples are the items you wear most – and the ones that define your style. That’s precisely where the investment makes a difference: in quality, feel, and versatility.
When it comes to cashmere, it's the quality we particularly want to highlight – the main reason why it’s worth the investment. The difference is clear, not only when compared to cheaper synthetics like acrylic and polyester, but also in relation to other natural materials such as merino wool.
So, what makes the cashmere jumper so special? And why does it deserve a permanent place in a considered wardrobe?
1. Unmatched Softness
Cashmere is renowned for its exceptional softness – a result of the fibre’s fineness, length, and origin. The wool comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, which is carefully combed by hand during their natural moulting period in spring. This ensures only the finest fibres are collected – without the coarse outer hairs.
Cashmere fibres are finer than sheep’s wool and merino, longer in structure and virtually scale-free – meaning they don’t itch or irritate the skin. The long fibres also offer strength, allowing them to be spun into yarns that combine durability with a uniquely soft touch.
2. Warmer Than Other Wools
At first glance, cashmere might not appear particularly warm due to its fine and lightweight feel – but quite the opposite is true. Cashmere goats live in extremely cold climates and have very little body fat, so they develop a dense, insulating undercoat for protection.
As a result, cashmere offers excellent warmth-to-weight performance and often insulates better than regular wool. This means a lightweight cashmere jumper can keep you just as warm – or warmer – than a chunky wool knit, but with a far more comfortable feel.
3. Retains Shape and Appearance
Synthetics are now common in knitwear, primarily due to their low cost. Modern manufacturing aims to mimic the qualities of wool, but the result is often a compromise. Synthetic garments tend to stretch out, lose their structure, and pill more easily.
Cashmere garments, on the other hand, retain their shape, softness, and lustre for much longer – even when compared to regular wool. The finer, longer fibres of cashmere are spun more tightly and evenly, creating a yarn that is both stable and elastic. This helps the garment keep its shape and appearance over time.
4. Far Less Prone to Pilling
All woollen knitwear can pill, including cashmere. But the difference lies in how the garment handles it over time. Thanks to cashmere’s long, fine, and even fibres, any pilling is typically less pronounced and easier to remove than on synthetic or coarse wool garments. Pilling on cashmere is also much easier to manage with a wool comb or fabric shaver – without damaging the garment.
5. Naturally Exclusive
Cashmere is a luxury material, not only because of its feel but due to its rarity and limited availability. It takes the fleece of several goats to produce just one jumper, and since the fibres can only be collected during a short seasonal window, supply is naturally restricted.
Unlike many other materials, cashmere cannot be mass-produced on the same scale. High-quality cashmere is usually made in small batches, requiring expert craftsmanship at every stage. This is also one reason why cashmere tends to retain its value – and is often highly sought-after in second-hand markets.
Investing in a cashmere jumper is a long-term decision – not just for its premium qualities, but also because it holds its value over time, both in your wardrobe and from a sustainability point of view. It’s a piece that can be worn multiple times a week, all year round, and suits a wide variety of settings.
At Care of Carl, we’re proud to showcase garments that endure – both in style and substance. By choosing something thoughtfully made and caring for it properly, you can dramatically extend its lifespan. And when it’s time to pass it on, it can find new life in someone else’s wardrobe through our Pre-Owned section.
The cashmere jumper is well worth the investment – not just a choice for today, but one that remains relevant over time. A garment that endures in style, function, and value.
