A christmas sweater doesn't necessary have to be a so called ”ugly christmas sweater” with flashing lights and Rudolf's red nose sown onto it with a loose thread, or other lavish motifs we remember from Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones Diary.
The ”ugly christmas sweater” have become a popular feature of the 21st century, but their history dates back to the 1950s. Back then they were called ”Jingle Bell Sweaters” and were long-sleeved sweaters decorated with christmas Motifs such as elves, snowmen, angels and snowflakes. Just like ties, hats and gloves, these sweaters became a way to express christmas spirit through fashion.
Today, the ”ugly” christmas sweaters have received a humorous twist and are an obvious part of the christmas celebration (for some) – especially at themed parties where the rule usually reads: the uglier and more christmas themed sweater, the better.
But in our opinion, christmas sweaters does not need to be exaggerated, tasteless or humorous. They might as well be stylish and classic. There are options for all styles, from the playful and humorous to the more simple and sophisticated styles. Whether you want to spread christmas cheer in the office, during christmas dinner or at a mulled wine evening with friends, there is a christmas sweater for every occasion and personality. For those who want to tonedown the christmas feeling, there are discreet options that can be used all year round – such as a plain red, green or grey knitted sweater.

Red, green, white, knitted, checkered, hot, simple or playful – how will you wear your christmas sweater this year?
The red christmas sweater
The red sweater is a timeless option that brings the thoughts to the warm colours of christmas without being opulent. Choose a red knit sweater for a toned down but elegant style, which also works all year round, but just slightly better this time of year.
The playful sweater
For those who really want to embrace the playful side of christmas, sweaters with classic christmas motifs such as reindeer, snowflakes or fir trees are the perfect choice. They work just as well at the office themed party as the mulled wine night with friends. This featured sweater is a tasteful spreader of joy for christmas.
The Fairisle-sweater
Sweaters with Fair Isle-pattern offer a sophisticated mix of long tradition and modernity. Inspired by classic British knitting patterns, they give a subtle christmas feel and work just as well for a winter walk as for the family christmas dinner.
The minimalist sweater
If you prefer a more minimalist approach, a solid-coloured or subtly patterned sweateris the perfect choice. Timeless and versatile, it works well for both casual and formal occasions and can easily be worn year-round, making it the smartest and most sustainable option.
