How to care and store your shirts
Text & photo: care of carl team
Published 2024-04-16In general, the same care applies to most shirts: use gentle detergent, avoid fabric softener and hang the shirt on a hanger when drying. However, depending on the material and method of manufacture, shirts may require different care routines. Regardless of the material, it is important to follow the washing advice provided on the shirt's label for the most appropriate treatment. For example, a silk shirt is hand washed and should be tumble dried, while a cotton shirt can be machine washed and hung to dry on a hanger.
Hang the shirt
Use a hanger with broad shoulders to hang your shirt in a wardrobe. Button it up to maintain its shape and prevent creases.
Air your shirt
Air your shirt every now and then to prevent odours and mould. This method is both simple and natural.
Prevent creases
When travelling, roll the shirt instead of folding it to minimise creases. You can also use garment bags to protect it during the journey.
Pre-treat stains
If there are visible stains, treat them before washing with a stain remover or detergent.
Wash with care
- Read the shirt's care label before washing and choose an appropriate detergent to maintain quality and prolong its lifetime.
- Sort shirts by colour and separate light from dark shirts.
- Use gentle wash programs to avoid unnecessary wear.
- Button up all buttons and turn the shirt inside out to protect colours and details.
- Cold water preserves colour and reduces the risk of shrinkage.
Dry your shirt
- Remove the shirt from the washing machine as soon as it's done to avoid creases.
- Stretch out all seams, cuffs, and the collar by hand.
- Hang the shirt on a hanger with the shirt collar standing up.
- Air-dry the shirt to avoid shrinkage.
- If using a dryer, use low heat.
Ironing(if necessary)
- Use a steamer or iron the shirt at an appropriate temperature to remove creases.
Dry cleaning
Dry cleaning can damage even the finest fabric and especially pearl buttons.
