Timelessly elegant, quilted jackets evoke the classic English countryside and time spent in the woods or on the estate. Barbour’s classic Liddesdale jacket is an archetypal example of this kind of outerwear. As with many other classics, the quilted jacket has seen many modern reinterpretations. The original, normally associated with Land Rovers and equestrianism, has today been transformed through variations in colour, model, length and detailing into outerwear with more character and attitude.

Originally a relatively loose-sitting, smart-casual jacket most common in navy, olive green and burgundy, contemporary models of quilted jacket, strongly influenced by racing and with belts, collars, pockets and buckles, make for exciting outerwear.

Recently, many prestigious brands have released quilted jackets with a cut similar to that of a lined blazer. In milder weather, these are perfect for a relaxed, smart-casual look. Both the original quilted jackets and many of their modern reinterpretations are constructed using semi-glossy, synthetic outer materials. More low-key variants with a matte cotton or woollen, and sometimes even flannel, texture are becoming increasingly common.
