5 Details That Enhance the Camping Experience

1. Choose Your Spot with Care

A successful night starts from the ground up. Look for an even surface – ideally soft but firm – where you can lie flat without sliding during the night. If the ground is sloped: place something under your mattress to compensate. It makes a big difference when the hours pass by in your sleeping bag.
2. Let the Wind Work with You, Not Against You
Pitch the narrow end of the tent into the wind to reduce drag. In windy terrain, bushes, hills or rocks can offer natural shelter, but avoid setting up camp under trees with dead branches. A safe spot means a good night’s sleep.
3. Dress in Layers – and Choose Your Sleeping Bag Carefully
The evening may feel cold, but the tent often warms up quickly. So dress in layers you can adjust. The goal: to stay warm without starting to sweat. Once moisture sets in, the night quickly becomes colder. A sleeping bag suited to the temperature is an investment in both comfort and recovery.
4. Light at the Right Height
Hanging a line from the ceiling of your tent gives you more options than you might expect. A lantern placed in the middle means you don’t have to fumble with torches in the dark and leaves your hands free for reading, searching or cooking. A simple detail that makes evenings far more practical – and much cosier.

5. Create Structure – Even in the Wild
An organised tent is a calm tent. Lay a small towel or doormat at the entrance to place your shoes on. Keep clothes, torches and small items in stuff sacks you can easily recognise. It might sound obvious – but when you crawl in after a long day, it makes a big difference.
