About Explorer 2
In 1971, Rolex presented the Oyster Perpetual Explorer II, reference number 1655, as the successor and complement to the already legendary Rolex Explorer of 1953. The first 1971 edition housed a Rolex calibre 1575 movement. The Rolex Explorer 2 is a watch model dedicated to explorers, cavers and professional groups operating in extreme environments.
The most significant feature of the Rolex Explorer 2 is the distinctive 24-hour hand and ring, both of which are designed to assist personnel working in conditions where there is no daylight. This made the Rolex Explorer 2 the obvious choice for polar explorers and speleologists alike. However, the 24-hour hand should not be confused with a multi-zone GMT function, as it is linked to the hour hand of the watch. Its main function is to give the wearer an idea of whether day or night prevails.
