All You Want to Know About Breitling

Breitling is the brand that brings to mind pilot watches, high-polish metal bracelets and chronographs big enough to land a plane. And yes – that's partly true. but behind the winged logo lies one of the most fascinating legacies in the world of watches. A brand that has journeyd from cockpits to celebrity wrists, from niche to pop culture icon – and is now heading towards a new golden age.
The company was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier, the heart of Switzerland's Jura region. As aviation took off in the early 1900s, the company stepped up – and in 1915, their first wrist chronograph was launched, created with pilots in mind.
The baton was passed down within the family, first to Léon's son Gaston, and then to his grandson Willi, who made Breitling the official supplier to the Royal Air Force during the 1930s. After pilot Ernest Schneider took over the brand in 1979, it continued to evolve and now has its headquarters in Grenchen.
What's the Deal with Breitling?
In short: function meets form. Breitling is one of the few brands that truly built its reputation on delivering tools for professionals – pilots, divers, military personnel. It's not just about attractive design (though there's plenty of that too), but about watches that are built to withstand, measure and assist.
Think of the Navitimer, capable of performing complex calculations right on your wrist. Or the Superocean, developed in the 1950s to remain water-resistant at depths of 200 metres.
What Makes Breitling Unique in Today's Watch World?
Many watch brands have scaled down, become more subtle and more "dressy". Breitling went the other way. They embraced their DNA: slightly larger cases, more colour, more edge. At the same time, they have undergone a major modernisation under Georges Kern (CEO since 2017), with slimmer models, in-house movements and clearer storytelling.
A kind of uncompromising modernity – without losing its identity.
Which Breitling Models Should I Know About?
That depends on who you are – but here are a few classics.
- Navitimer – Legendary pilot chronograph, launched in 1952.
- Superocean (Heritage) – Diver's watch with a retro aura and modern performance.
- Chronomat – 80s icon with rouleaux bracelet and military soul.
- Top Time – Breitling's flirtation with racing culture, often featuring colourful dials.
- Premier – For those who appreciate Breitling's history but want something a bit more refined.
Who Wears Breitling?
Traditionally, Breitling has been associated with pilots and adventurers.
But today it's a brand for those who like to go their own way. Surfers, creatives, motor enthusiasts and business profiles who want something different from the usual steel watches – but made in a subtle way.
What Should I Consider If I Want to Buy a Breitling?
- Size: Some models, especially older ones, can be quite large. Try it on your wrist.
- Service history: As with all watches on the second-hand market, it's important to know the history.
- The feeling: Breitling is like a pair of aviators – it requires the right attitude. If it feels right, go for it.
In conclusion
Breitling might not be the first watch brand that comes to mind in a world where Rolex, Omega and Patek often steal the headlines. But it's a brand with soul, style and legacy that stretches far back.
And just like the best watches – it's when you feel it on your wrist, see how the light hits the dial, and understand why someone designed this chronograph in 1952 – that it clicks.
